A Report of the Day
by Wendy Turner

The 12th Annual Vancouver Westie Walk enjoyed the best weather we have ever had. On Sunday, May 27, 2007, 117 little white dogs and their families came out to enjoy a morning of fun and games.
From the moment the bagpipes started, well even before, the tails were wagging and greeting each other in the gathering area. They get so excited to see so many others that look just like them!

Terry Shaw, has very kindly offered to take over the piping duties for our Walk. We were very saddened this year to hear of the passing of his friend and ours, Rod McTaggart, who so generously gave of his time over the past 10 years to pipe us in. Terry did a splendid job and the dogs seemed to think that they were all back in the Highlands.

The events started off with a “Parade of Rescues.” We had 9 rescue dogs in the parade. Six were dogs who had been rescued over the past few years in BC and 3 others were rescues belonging to a lady who has a very special place in her heart for rescues. The dogs all strutted their stuff and seemed to enjoy the spotlight. All their new forever Mums and Dads looked very proud as well. There were tears as some of the stories were read out but these lucky little dogs are now all in wonderful caring homes.

Then for the favorite event of the morning … The Terrier Race. The dogs were bound and determined to catch that squirrel. One little dog outside the course area pulled out of her lead and nearly took the fence down trying to get there. When her turn came, you can be sure she was the winner!

The Wiener Dunk is a favorite to those westies who are food-fixated. One little dog ate her wiener, won her heat and then proceeded to try to eat everyone else’s wiener! The Ice Cream Eating Contest shows off the different personalities of the westies. Some just gulp down their spoonful of ice cream and others are very dainty about it!

We even managed to have an Obedience Trial! 14 westies tried their best. It was impressive to see so many well-behaved dogs.

The oldest dog attending this year, Muggins, is 14 years old. She owns MaryLou Chapman. The youngest dog, Lola, shares her home with  Jackie MacPherson.

Thanks to so many generous corporate sponsors and fellow Westie owners, our raffle was outstanding. We had a great “Westie Basket” full of goodies all geared to the Westie, a crate, a Westie collector plate, “Snowy & Frosty” ornament, Westie towels, Westie pillows and in total about 70 prizes, so most people who bought a ticket got a prize.

It was a wonderful morning. Thanks to a very hard-working and generous committee, 100% of proceeds go to support Westie Rescue of Canada.

We hope to see you next year. The Vancouver Westie Walk ALWAYS takes place the last Sunday in May at 9:30 AM in Lighthouse Park, West Vancouver.

A Note from WRC ...

Westie Rescue of Canada send our heartfelt love, thanks and admiration to everyone involved with the Vancouver Westie Walk for supporting our organization to help homeless Westies find new, loving and forever homes. It is thanks to the generousity of the Vancouver and surrounding areas' (including the US) Westie lovers that our organization is able to help those Westies who for one reason or another find themselves in need of new homes, and in some instances, ongoing, expensive Veterinary care.
