Manitoba

New Brunswick
Newfoundland and Labrador
Northwest Territories

Ontario
Prince Edward Island

As indicated in the automated response you received from us, please read through the following very carefully regarding our policies, then download the Adoption/Foster form, then either print it out and complete the applicable sections depending on whether you wish to Adopt and/or Foster with WRC, sign the form and then return it to the director or volunteer for your area - contact information provided further down.

Or if you chose to complete the form electronically, click on the form to download it, and return it to the director or representative for your area - contact information provided further down.

Please do NOT alter the content of the forms in any way, as this could nullify your application.

At Westie Rescue of Canada (WRC), we do our best to match deserving people with wonderful dogs, who for one reason or another find themselves in need of new, forever homes.

At this time, WRC have no Westies available for adoption, and as with all Westie rescue organizations, there is a waiting list of people who are interesting in adopting a Westie. Please do not let this discourage you, however. As we usually have very little notice of any Westies needing our help in finding new and permanent homes, we never know when one may become available for adoption, or just where that special home may be.

As we want to ensure the next home our Westies have is the last loving home they will ever know, you will find our questionnaires are quite detailed and require a lot of information. We are confident, however, that people seriously interested in adopting a Westie, understand that this is for the benefit of both our Westies and potential new owners.

All our foster homes are considered volunteers with WRC. As such, if you are interested in both Adopting AND Fostering a Westie through our organization, in addition to completing the applicable parts of the Adoption/Foster form (depending on whether you wish to Adopt, Foster and/or both), and returning it to us by regular mail or electronically, we ask that you go in and complete our online Volunteer Form by clicking here

Once we have received your form(s), the director or representative for your area will be in touch with you. If you are interested solely in adopting one of our Westies, please know that we do not check your references or do a home check until such time we MAY have a Westie available for adoption.

If you have any questions regarding becoming an approved foster home, feel free to contact us.

We will keep your applications on file for one year. If after that time there has been no opportunity for you to adopt and/or foster a Westie, and if you are still interested in adopting and/or fostering with WRC, please let us know this in order that we may keep your file active. Furthermore, if any of your information changes at any time, please let us know this as well.

A little about our adoption policies. By the time you have reached this page, we hope you would have read through the more detailed version of our policies, which can be found by clicking here (a new window will open so you can access this information and not lose your spot on this page). If you have not yet read the Policies and Procedures document, please do so before continuing.

When/if a Westie becomes available, the person interested in adopting him or her is required to undergo an initial, minimum, three-month fostering period with the dog. This is to allow time for the potential new owner to identify problems that might require the dog being returned to our organization. It also allows time for the Westie to settle in with its new family. We recognize that as most of these rescues are an unknown quantity, (possible health and/or behavioral problems), not all situations are a good match for owner or dog. Therefore, the fostering period also provides the foster owner with the opportunity to return the dog to us without question ... or judgment.

Please be patient. It can take from a few weeks to several months … or more, to put the "right" dog with the "right" person. We try as much as possible to place our Westies with the people who have been waiting the longest, but the fact is that sometimes the last person to apply may be the "best" home for a particular Westie that comes into our care.

We also ask you to remember that we are a volunteer network, not a kennel or a shelter. We cannot hold dogs for people, and if we call you regarding a Westie, we need a timely response. If you do acquire a dog from another source, please let us know so that we can put your application in our inactive file.

If you are looking for a Westie puppy, or an older retired show dog or female, then we suggest you contact the Canadian West Highland White Terrier Club for a listing of reputable breeders in your area. For more information, go to:

http://www.canadawestieclub.ca/westies/breeders.html

It is rare for us to get a Westie under one year of age, although sometimes people who have purchased a puppy from a "commercial breeder" or pet shop, will realize that they have made a mistake and ask us to help them find a new home for the animal. However, you should be aware that as these puppies were not bred under the best of conditions, at times there could be some health and/or temperament issues involved.

PLEASE NOTE: As we cannot enforce our policies outside of Canada, we can and only will accept applications from person(s) who are permanently residing in Canada. Please do not send in an application if you live outside of Canada, as it will not be processed.

We also do not do "third-party" referrals. We will only adopt to the person(s) who apply to us and complete our forms. We will not place a Westie with anyone who wishes to adopt the Westie on behalf of their friends, family, children, etc.

Versions of our Adoption/Foster Application are available in both Word (Doc) and Acrobat (Pdf) format. You can download a free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader by clicking here. The link will open in a new window, which you can close once you have finished downloading the program.
